Position Details

  • Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Animal Excellence Coordinator, the Web Design Intern will assist with the planning and construction of a “Digital Resource Center” tool for internal information sharing among Zoo staff and volunteers. During the first few weeks, the intern will collaborate across Zoo departments to identify needs of the resource center and brainstorm web layout and interface. After information gathering and evaluation, the intern will continue to partner with a select committee to guide the design and construction of the web portal. The intern will then construct the full web portal, testing various features and components of the final product. This project requires attention to detail, critical thinking, excellent organizational skills, and effective communication. The intern candidate must be able to work independently, as well partner effectively with the broader Zoo team. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Intranet web portal design and construction utilizing Microsoft Office 365 SharePoint software.
  • Survey work to compile initial information and client feedback.
  • Coordination and communication with multiple Zoo departments.
  • Regular communication of progress to Zoo partners.
  • Provide support as needed to Animal Excellence team and/or Dept. of Visitor Experience & FUN.

The intern will also have the option to participate in professional development classes and opportunities organized as part of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden internship program.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be age 16 or older.
  • Must be enrolled at least part-time (6 credit hours for undergraduate students and 5 credit hours for graduate students), with the exception of summer quarter, or will be a registered student during the next academic quarter/semester for summer work. Student workers must meet the enrollment requirement for the entire quarter.
  • Recipient of work study award based on financial need and must be admitted into a degree program.


The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:

  • Current college junior or senior working toward a digital media related field: IT, Web Design, Computer Science, Communications, etc.; or a recent graduate with a related degree.
  • Proven experience in web design (including both planning and execution).
  • Experience with SharePoint software.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, communication skills (both written and oral), critical thinking ability, and attention to detail.
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden: creating adventure, conveying knowledge, conserving nature, and serving the community.
