About the Department
The Radiation Safety Office oversees the safe and compliant use of Radioactive Materials and Radiation Generating Equipment for the University of Cincinnati and its affiliate partners.
Job Overview
The Office of Research Radiation Safety Office (RSOf) department is seeking to fill a Sr. Health Physics Tech position. This position will provide technical support for the fulfillment of duties and mission of the RSOf and provide customer service type functions for our partners. The successful candidate will be able to conduct all tasks in a timely manner with a high degree of quality, represent the RSOf while in laboratory or hospital setting, and have the ability to prioritize tasks or duties to ensure regulatory compliance and personnel safety.
Essential Functions
- Perform all duties of the Staff Health Physics Technician 2.
- Coordinate the radioactive waste management operations including, but not limited to: scheduling pickups; picking up waste from laboratories; processing, packaging, and disposing of waste in accordance with department procedures; maintaining records; and ensuring related surveys are performed as required.
- Inspect and prepare radioactive materials for shipment or disposal.
- Calibrate survey equipment and assist in the maintenance of other radiation safety equipment.
- Check sealed radioactive sources for leakage; inventory sealed sources.
- Instruct radiation safety personnel and others as necessary on radiation safety policies and practices.
- Perform related duties based on departmental need.
Required Education
- Associate’s Degree in Physical or Biological Science.
- Five (5) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
Required Trainings/Certifications
- Acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain a valid HAZMAT Commercial Driver’s License within three (3) months of employment.
Required Experience
Three (3) years related experience.
Additional Qualifications Considered
- Customer service experience and team oriented.
- Good communication and organization skills.
- Computer experience/competence using Microsoft Office – Word, Excel etc.
- Comfortable using basic hand tools.
- Direct experience with handling radioactive material and general instruments used in the health physics field.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
- Must be able to demonstrate the ability to bend, reach, pull, push and lift up to 40 pounds without mechanical assistance.
First Starting Pay Rate: $29.30 per hour Post Probationary Rate: $30.77 Shift: per hour
