SUMMARY:  UC Libraries seek a dynamic, passionate and creative Science & Engineering Librarian (SEL) to develop research and instructional programs for the UC STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) populations.  This position provides critical user support through research consultations, teaching, workshops, collection development and new initiatives like data services and repository outreach.  The SEL is liaison to designated programs in the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) and the McMicken College of Arts & Sciences (A&S), with special attention given to the university’s institution-wide innovation agenda. This position collaborates with a dynamic team of librarians, informationists and operational staff in the Science and Engineering Libraries and in related units such as the Digital Scholarship Center and scholarly communications.  The SEL represents STEM disciplines and UC Libraries’ interests on appropriate libraries, college, and university-wide committees. This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position.

 

RELATIONSHIP AND AUTHORITY:  Reports to and receives guidance from the Director of the Science & Engineering Libraries. Functional supervisor for support staff and student assistants as related to responsibilities.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Serves as liaison for designated disciplines and academic programs in the sciences, engineering, and technology. Utilizes library and information science domain expertise and technological solutions to enhance library services, engagement, partnerships and innovations.
  • Coordinates collection development for assigned areas, developing and implementing data-driven strategies. Contributes to collection development initiatives in the Science and Engineering Libraries and across UC Libraries.
  • Plans and delivers instruction to faculty, students and researchers. Collaborates with faculty to integrate scholarly resources into the curriculum.  Serves as lead planner for the Science and Engineering Libraries’ workshop series.
  • Works closely with UC Libraries’ Researcher Services team to develop high-impact services (data management, visualization, GIS, informatics, etc.) tailored to STEM population needs.
  • Provides outreach and consultation to STEM faculty and students on the digital repository. Collaborates on broader initiatives in digital scholarship and scholarly communications.
  • Assists the Director in identifying, planning and cultivating partnerships between the SEL and CEAS/A&S, including innovations in technology and spaces.
  • Develops initiatives that align with the university’s innovation agenda, including support for cross-disciplinary collaborations and experiential learning.
  • Serves on appropriate committees and organizations related to duties and responsibilities and in support of UC Libraries’ strategic interests.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Master’s degree in library or information science/management or relevant graduate education or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • Strong background in implementing and assessing data-powered initiatives and technologies.
  • Commitment to a high quality of service and collaboration.
  • Prior teaching experience, knowledge of current instructional pedagogies, and an ability to develop and deliver responsive and forward-thinking instructional programs. 
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to both work independently and to contribute to a collegial team environment.
  • Ability to fulfill the University of Cincinnati’s requirements for tenure and promotion. Commitment to professional growth and development.

 

Based on the nature of this position, the university is unable to provide sponsorship for work visas.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Two years of professional experience in a STEM-focused library or academic research library.
  • Undergraduate degree in a STEM field or extensive experiential background in a STEM discipline.
  • Library collection development experience in a STEM discipline.
  • Experience with support for researchers, such as consulting in the areas of data management, visualization, GIS, informatics, data analytics or research computing.
