Job Overview
The Business Manager supports the research mission of the Department of Surgery by managing financial, administrative, and operational activities. This role ensures efficient coordination of research grants, budgets, and personnel to advance the department’s research objectives. This role will have direct supervisory responsibilities of a unit or multiple units, in addition to management responsibilities for a wide range of projects/tasks associated with primary business operations, academic, or student services.
Responsibilities include day-to-day administration of specialized activities related to a business office and reports to management, provide recommendations and advice to management or other groups on process related topics and conduct or carry out work procedures and activities in accordance with local, state, and federal, and university regulations.
Hybrid remote work option available (OH/IN/KY residents) after training, per university policies.
Essential Functions
- Assist in the management of the financial, administrative, and operational activities of a varied business unit with a considerable income generation component.
- Oversee financial and administrative operations for research and quality/performance improvements projects, including budget preparation, grant and contract monitoring, and compliance with university, state, and federal regulations.
- Coordinate purchasing priorities and recommend capital expenditures to support research infrastructure.
- May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).
- Provide guidance and facilitation to faculty and staff on research-related processes, grant submissions and/or IRB protocols.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure timely reporting for research funding and expenditures.
- Support quality improvement projects across the department.
- Perform related duties based on departmental need to support departmental research goals. This job description can be changed at any time.
Required Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or related field.
- Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
Required Experience
Three (3) years of financial and administrative experience.
Additional Qualifications Considered
- Experience in research administration or financial management, ideally in an academic or medical research setting.
- Knowledge of grant management, university policies, and research compliance regulations.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
