The Ground Floor Makerspace + Microfactory, located at the 1819 Innovation Hub, provides the UC community with access to advanced tools for prototyping, fabrication, and physical product development. As a key unit within the Office of Innovation, we are part of a team of makers, educators, and entrepreneurs dedicated to the vision of defining a new era of innovation and impact at UC. The 12,000-square-foot world-class makerspace includes a full wood shop, metal fabrication shop, and prototyping/assembly area and is stocked with state of the art tools – including 3-D printers, laser cutters, CNC machining centers, and a CNC waterjet cutter – to support academics, research, and entrepreneurism.


We are seeking a dynamic team member used to wearing multiple hats with skills in both manual and digital fabrication to join our full-time staff. The incumbent should possess proven skills in CAD/CAM, fabrication, and prototyping, with a broad knowledge of materials and methods. Our team thrives on different perspectives, and it is imperative that the new member balance their expertise with a commitment to equity, and willingness to learn.


Makerspace Technicians are full-time professional staff reporting to the Makerspace Manager. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Educates users on the safe, smart, and practical use of makerspace equipment, tools, and software.
  • Develops and maintains standard operating procedures in compliance with OSHA and EHS policies.
  • Enforces policies and procedures regarding safety, training, and access.
  • Proactively maintains equipment and facility, assuring that they are clean, safe, and ready for operation.
  • Oversee and mentor student workers.
  • Proactively coaches the design and layout work necessary to fabricate objects from various materials.
  • Advises on the installation, configuration, and modification of equipment and associated software.
  • Collaborates with UC faculty and administration to support curriculum and programing for the 1819 Makerspace.
  • Supports linkages between Makerspace activities and other key functions of the Office of Innovation including launching startups, patenting new inventions, and influencing industry partners.
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required and a minimum of three (3) years of experience -OR- Associate's degree with five (5) years of related experience -OR- a combination of relevant education and seven (7) years of experience.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in operating and programing CNC machines is required. Working knowledge of Office 365 applications; Good written and oral communication skills. Thorough knowledge of additive and subtractive processes, machine operation, fabrication techniques, and working with various materials including wood, metal, and plastics in a prototyping or manufacturing environment. 


Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and three (3) years’ experience in a relevant field. Experience teaching fabrication processes and materials. Thorough knowledge of Fusion 360, Siemens NX, and Adobe CC is desired.
