Job Overview

The University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College invites applications for the Laboratory Manager position in the Biology Department. This position will report to the Biology Department Chair and will supervise a team of two laboratory associates. This is a full-time position.

 

The Laboratory Manager oversees a team of two laboratory associates that set up laboratories for courses in Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, freshman and sophomore majors-level Biology, and Biology for Allied Health. This full-time, year-round position is responsible for overseeing approximately 70 laboratory sections during the fall semester, 40 sections in the spring, and 10 sections in the summer. The Lab Manager ensures that equipment and supplies for teaching laboratories and research labs are maintained.  In addition, the Lab Manager is responsible for record keeping and compliance with all necessary health and safety regulations and works closely with the Department Chair to prepare and implement a laboratory budget.

The ability to work some irregular hours, including occasional late afternoon, evening, and weekend hours may be needed.  The selected candidate will have a commitment to student learning at a diverse, open-access college. This position requires proficiency in English and the ability to communicate effectively with faculty and students in a fast-paced environment. This position is not eligible for visa or green card sponsorship.

Essential Functions

  • Manage the activities of the assigned research/instructional support facility and laboratory and supervise or assist lab associates in setting up lab courses.
  • Consult with appropriate administrator to determine equipment and materials purchase priorities, evaluate, and communicate condition of existing equipment; includes responsibility for procurement activities in labs and stockrooms, including periodic audits and overseeing maintenance of equipment.
  • Develop unit procedures; including preparing schedules for use during laboratory teaching sessions; develop equipment training procedures; train laboratory staff and students in the use of equipment, maintain records of training, communicate, and demonstrate care and correct use of equipment.
  • Enforce health and safety practices and procedures related to the operation of the labs; maintain departmental records of faculty and staff training, chemical stocks and other required documents; serve on the departmental Laboratory Safety Committee and as a Chemical Safety Officer.
  • Implement quality improvement initiatives/controls and assess staff skills to ensure achievement of established department goals and objectives.
  • May serve on additional university, division, and departmental committees, attend meetings/conferences, and serve as liaison to other university departments, vendors.
  • Provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological science (for example, Microbiology, Biology, Health Sciences, Neuroscience, or Physiology) or a related scientific or healthcare field.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

 

Required Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience in an academic or industry laboratory environment in the field of biology and/or chemistry.  At least one (1) of the three years of experience must be related to the field of Microbiology.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Candidates with a Masters, PhD, MD, or other healthcare-related degree will also be considered.
  • Previous supervisory experience in a laboratory setting at the college level.
  • Experience in the preparation and maintenance of teaching laboratories.
  • Experience in molecular biology.

  • Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
