Job Overview
The University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College invites applications for the Laboratory Associate position in the Biology Department. This position will report to the Biology Department Lab Manager. This is a full-time position.
The biology laboratory associate assists in setting up laboratories for courses in Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, freshman and sophomore majors-level Biology, and Biology for Allied Health. This full-time, year-round position will provide support materials and activities for the teaching needs of approximately 70 laboratory sections during the fall semester, 40 sections in the spring, and 10 sections in the summer. Under the supervision of the lab manager, this position helps to ensure that equipment and supplies for teaching laboratories and research labs are maintained.
The ability to work some irregular hours, including occasional late afternoon, evening, and weekend hours may be needed. The selected candidate will have a commitment to student learning at an open-access college. This position requires proficiency in English and the ability to communicate effectively with faculty and students in a fast-paced environment. This position is not eligible for visa or green card sponsorship.
Essential Functions
- Supervise, train, assist students using laboratory facilities. Demonstrate care and correct use of equipment.
- Prepare all media, reagents, and materials necessary for the laboratory courses.
- Maintain bacterial cultures used in labs.
- Test materials or procedures when necessary or requested.
- Set up and take down all materials and equipment for experiments.
- Set of various lab courses, provide support materials and activities for multiple teaching and research labs, and monitor all activities within designated laboratories.
- Under supervisor of the lab manager, maintain all laboratory equipment, including ordering of supplies; perform basic maintenance on equipment, or schedule professional repair. Communicate the condition of existing equipment to management.
- Assist faculty on project feasibility and design.
- Follow all health and safety practices and procedures related to the operation of the labs and stay up to date on training as needed.
- Act as liaison with local industry regarding specifications and availability of new and used laboratory equipment.
- Recommend space and equipment assignments as requested and resolve any conflicts for space and equipment.

Required Education
- Associate’s degree in a biological science (for example, Microbiology, Biology, Health Sciences, Neuroscience, or Physiology) or a related scientific or healthcare field
- Three (3) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement
Required Experience
- One (1) year of experience in an academic or industry laboratory environment in the field of biology and/or chemistry
- Some of this experience should be in the field of Microbiology
- Candidate should have experience in aseptic technique, PCR, Western blot, gel electrophoresis, maintaining bacterial cultures, preparing media, and pouring plates
Additional Qualifications Considered
- Candidates with a Bachelor's, Master's, PhD, MD, or other healthcare-related degree will also be considered
- Previous experience in a laboratory setting at the college level
- Experience in the preparation and maintenance of teaching laboratories
- Experience in molecular biology
