Job Overview

The College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a Lab Associate (Full-time at 40 hours per week & benefits eligible) in the DAAP fabrication labs. The DAAP fabrication labs include the Rapid Prototyping Center (RPC) that has state-of-the-art digital fabrication equipment and the DAAP Build Lab (DBL) that includes traditional hand and power tools for working with wood and metals. The college intends to hire up to two (2) qualified Lab Associates to work primarily in the DBL environment, but special consideration will be given to individuals who could operate in both environments. The selected individuals will assist in overseeing the DBL with special consideration given to individuals with fine woodworking skills, and/or metal working skills, and/or 3D digital modeling/Computer Numerical Control experience. In addition to duties listed below, the Lab Associates will assist in facilitating workshops, tutorials, and facility orientations including health and safety training for students and faculty from other schools within DAAP and the UC community.

Together, the Rapid Prototyping Center and DAAP Build Lab encompass approximately 15,000 square feet with many high tech and traditional tools for creating physical projects. Students learn how to safely use the equipment and navigate within the ecosystem of the DAAP fabrication facilities and their collaborative learning environments. Our goal is to provide access to a safe, friendly, and comfortable shop environment.  The space serves as a research, teaching, and production laboratory for students and faculty at DAAP.

Essential Functions

  • Monitor activity and use within the lab facility
  • Supervise activities, oversee and instruct students and faculty on proper use of tools and equipment used for projects.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe shop/lab environment and run safety tutorials when needed.
  • Organize and maintain a professional shop/lab environment. This includes but is not limited to inventory, maintenance, clean equipment and dust collection.   
  • Maintain and troubleshoot all shop/lab equipment; regularly analyze condition of equipment and coordinate maintenance and repair.
  • Assist in overseeing student staff.
  • Aid and perform in shop/lab-initiated tasks.
  • Identify surplus and shortages of consumables and suggest purchases.
  • Advise and report to the shop/lab manager.

Required Education

  • Associate's Degree.
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

One (1) year of experience in an area of technical specialty.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • College level coursework in Art, Architecture, Design or related field.
  • Experience/expertise in hot and cold metal working and fine wood working.
  • Ability to maintain and troubleshoot shop equipment.
  • Proficiency in applicable software: 3d digital modeling software, Adobe software, MS Word and Excel.
