The Hamilton County Municipal Court Help Center is a collaboration between the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts and the University of Cincinnati College of Law. The Help Center provides self-represented litigants with information and limited legal advice to help them better advocate for themselves in the court system. The Help Center assists with evictions, debt collection lawsuits, landlord/tenant issues, small claims cases and other civil cases in the Municipal Court. The Staff Attorney will provide limited legal advice to Help Center visitors to help them understand court processes, draft written pleadings, prepare for hearings and otherwise resolve their legal issue. The Staff Attorney will also help recruit, train and supervise student interns and attorney volunteers; draft and improve model pleadings and informational guides; assist with outcome tracking; and work to identify solutions to address systemic issues faced by self-represented litigants.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide limited legal advice consultations to Help Center visitors to help them understand the law/court processes, draft written pleadings, prepare for hearings and otherwise resolve civil legal issues
  • Work to continuously improve Help Center assistance to self-represented people
  • Prepare self-help materials to assist self-represented litigants understand the law, court processes and litigate their cases
  • Help to recruit, train and supervise student interns and attorney volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate clearly, patiently and respectfully with visitors who are often in crises, who have had past negative experiences in the courts and who may have limited understanding of the court system
  • Ability to solve complex and routine problems especially when no apparent solution is in sight
  • Ability to develop and improve upon current processes, to be innovative and to think long-term while focusing on the day-to-day tasks
  • Ability to quickly and precisely interpret and apply applicable law to individual situations
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with many interruptions
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a part of a team
  • Ability to quickly adapt to new situations, to provide guidance to senior management and to appropriately delegate tasks to others
  • Ability to work towards long-term goals while managing short-term priorities


Minimum Qualifications
Required: J.D. from an accredited United States law school; Active license to practice law in Ohio with admission to the Ohio Bar Association. 
Preferred: Experience practicing in Municipal Court; a strong commitment to serving underserved and vulnerable people; Spanish language abilities
