Job Overview

The Department of Administration and Finance Grounds/Moving/ Transportation Services is recruiting for the Director of Grounds.  The Director of Grounds at UC will lead and direct the operations of the Grounds Maintenance Department of Facilities Management.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and implement plans to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness of the Grounds Maintenance department while adhering to state, federal, and university policies.
  • Provide oversight of the landscape and grounds of the university, including grass mowing, applications of chemicals, planting of yearly landscape foliage, and tree and shrub maintenance.
  • Ensure safe, proper, and efficient use of landscape equipment and supplies through effective policy and procedure development and implementation.
  • Provide oversight for daily trash removal performed by staff. Manage the waste removal contract, including the bid and renewal processes.
  • Provide oversight of irrigation systems including operating schedules, new installations and repairs.
  • Provide oversight of the snow removal operations on all non-roadway surfaces. Coordinate with other university organizations during severe weather events and provide information on the state of non-road surfaces to be used in determining if the university will close or stay open.
  • Develop and provide plans for the strategy of Facilities Management to other departmental leaders and to the top Facilities Management executive.
  • Manage and make budget recommendations while maintaining fiscal responsibility for Facilities Management.
  • Represent management at the appropriate level in labor relations matters; serve on designated university committees.
  • Identify, prioritize, and oversee deferred maintenance and other projects requiring specifications and bidding.
  • May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Thirteen (13) years of combined relevant education, work experience, and/or other specialized training can fulfill minimum education and experience requirements

Required Trainings/Certifications

Valid Driver's License with an acceptable record

Required Experience

  • Nine (9) years of experience in facilities management.
  • Three (3) years of supervision.
