The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is seeking a Department Head with the vision and leadership skills to expand and lead the transformative growth of BME to become the focal point at UC for inclusive and collaborative translational biomedical research, experiential learning and technological innovation. With strengths in the areas of cardiovascular tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, imaging and image guided therapeutics, orthopedics, cancer and medical device design across the practice of medicine, the Department Head will foster collaborations with the Academic Health campus through collaborative leadership. Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS), (172 full time and 135 tenured/tenure-track faculty), the Department Head will have responsibility for overseeing department operations, including academics, finances, personnel and planning, and will enjoy unprecedented opportunities to build on the base of over $36 million in grant funding in the strategic areas at UC and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC).

The Department Head is charged with developing and sustaining premier research programs and with preparing students to become high performing professionals in the local and global workplace. The concept of the first co-op program originated in CEAS and enjoys long standing relationships with regional industries.  As the University enters its 200th year, the new Head of BME will have the opportunity to transform the co-op program to integrate with the changing industrial and trade landscape. The Department Head will lead the development of innovative education and interdisciplinary research programs, encourage integrative efforts within CEAS and the University community, and strengthen entrepreneurial and academic partnerships with government, industry, and other academic entities.


BME houses undergraduate and graduate programs in Biomedical Engineering. BME has graduated over 340 bachelor’s and 30 PhD, MS, and Master of Engineering (MEng) alumni since its origination in 2001. Current undergraduate enrollment in the College includes 4,826 students, including those at the affiliated university in China (Chongqing), and 1314 graduate students. BME has 7 full time faculty, 4 of which are tenured or on tenure track.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Earned doctorate in Engineering or closely related field; a distinguished record in research and scholarship that will allow appointment to a senior tenured position; a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education; and demonstrated collaborative leadership, administrative, and interpersonal skills. The applicant should have a demonstrable commitment to a culturally diverse environment and recognition and service at the national and international level.
