Hoxworth Blood Center is seeking a Blood Bank Technologist to perform complex laboratory procedures, which may include preparation of red blood cells platelet concentrates, plasma and cryoprecipitate from volunteer whole blood collections; preparation of blood products from automated collection procedures; leukocyte reduction procedures of blood and blood components; irradiation of blood and blood components; freezing and deglycerolizing of red blood cells; open and closed system pooling of cryoprecipitate and closed system platelet pooling; preparation of specialized hospital blood products; processing and shipping of samples to testing laboratory and other duties as needed.
Primary Duties
- Prepare component products for transfusion (i.e., red blood cells, washed red blood cells, frozen red blood cells, deglycerolized red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, recovered plasma, cryoprecipitate, platelet concentrated and source leukocytes and blood salvage).
- Label products (i.e., fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate and platelet concentrates for transfusion and dispose of unusable units.
- Assist with instruction of students, new employees, residents, etc.
- May perform procedures to freeze bone marrow, platelets and semen.
- Process incoming blood specimens and orders.
- Evaluate acceptability of incoming specimens and perform electronic data entry related to sample preparation for blood bank testing. Retrieve and interpret blood bank test results as they relate to sample preparation.
- Retrieve, interpret and update blood product inventory data.
- Prepare pooled platelet concentrates and pooled cryoprecipitate.
- Inform physicians when substitutions must be made in producing specific platelet concentrates.
- Process incoming specimens; order issue and/or release blood components.
- Communicate appropriate information to individuals internal, as well as external, to the department.
- Maintain a safe and clean work area.
- Monitor inventory of supplies and reagents.
- Perform related duties based on departmental need.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with (6) months related experience; -OR- Associate degree with two (2) years related experience; -OR- four (4) years experience.
Candidate must successfully complete an background check as a prerequisite for employment. The ideal candidate must also be able to work a flexible schedule, which may include working 3rd shift, weekends, and rotating on-call responsibilities. A demonstrated work history of the skills and experience necessary to complete these duties is highly desirable.
This position will be a professional position paid at an hourly rate.
