The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music seeks an experienced opera stage director and teacher for tenure track appointment within the Opera Department of the Division of Theatre Arts, Production and Arts Administration (TAPAA). This is a tenure-track faculty position with rank and salary commensurate with professional and/or teaching experience on a five-person opera faculty predominantly serving graduate students studying voice, opera and theatre design and production at CCM.


This is a tenure-track faculty position with rank and salary commensurate with professional and/or teaching experience. Initial Appointment would be for a period not less than three years. Subsequent renewal of appointment will be based upon successful evaluation via University reappointment procedures. The anticipated start date would be August 15, 2019.


Job Description: The Department of Opera at the University of Cincinnati seeks a qualified teacher/ stage director to teach graduate courses including Opera Workshop, Opera Characterization, Opera Production and team teach Professional Development; to create other course work as needed to maintain excellence in the training of opera artists; and to direct one to two projects annually, primarily for the Department of Opera. In addition, the successful candidate will assist the chair in overseeing the work of Artist Diploma Directing students assigned to undergraduate/graduate opera productions and concert opera; will assist in recruiting efforts for new Artist Diploma students in Opera; will serve as a mentor to students in Technical Design and Production on Opera productions they are directing; will work with the opera faculty to create, revise, and maintain a curriculum and an opera season that complements and supports the goals of the Division of Opera, Musical Theatre, Drama, Arts Administration and Theatre Design and Production (TAPAA) and the goals of UC/CCM; and will work to provide administrative assistance and work in close  collaboration  with the Chair of Opera to  oversee the daily management of the CCM Opera Department.
Opera and Voice majors at CCM are predominantly graduate students who have successfully completed competitive auditions for a place in one of three programs: the AD in Opera Performance, Coaching or Directing, the MM in Vocal Performance, and the DMA in Vocal Performance. The Department of Theatre Design and Production offers a BFA/ MFA in the following seven areas of production: Costume Design and Technology, Lighting Design and Technology, Makeup Design and Technology, Scenic Design, Sound Design, Stage Management and Technical Production.


The University of Cincinnati is the 10th largest research institution in the country, and the New York Times has called CCM “one of the nation’s leading conservatories.” The college has recently completed a 15-million-dollar renovation of it’s performance venues. This has provided CCM with one of the most comprehensive arts training facilities in the United States. The Opera program resides within the division of Theatre Arts, Production and Arts Administration (TAPAA), which has approximately 55 members on its faculty and staff. The Opera department collaborates regularly with The Cincinnati Opera both in their summer season and in the development of new works through the collaboration of Opera Fusion: New Works.


Requirements: Successful candidates will have university or conservatory directing and teaching experience within a major opera production program, and/or professional credentials as a stage director in opera. Extensive knowledge of the repertoire is a requirement and candidates must be fluent in their ability to integrate into a complex production/educational team that involves significant collaboration in the areas of voice, orchestral, ensemble, musical theatre and theatre production faculty. The successful candidate will be a teaching artist with a strong background in music and a working fluency in Italian, French and German. Candidates must be exceptionally well organized and have strong administrative skills.  Local residency is required, however continued contact and engagement with the professional field during the academic year and at other times is encouraged as part of the Opera Department’s philosophy of the “teaching artist” and the college’s requirement for reappointment and tenure.
