Job Overview

The Associate Director for Administration (ADA) at University of Cincinnati Cancer Center (UCCC) is an essential member of the senior leadership team responsible for the development, execution, and oversight of programmatic and operational activities, functions, and initiatives which enable the Cancer Center to realize its mission, vision, and full potential.  The ADA supports Cancer Center faculty and institutional leaders through development of administrative and research infrastructure and capabilities which facilitate research program and shared resource development, community outreach and engagement, cancer research training and education coordination, and plans for equity and diversity. The ADA is the principal administrative officer of the Cancer Center’s research and academic enterprise and its central Administrative Core office.  He/she collaborates closely with colleagues and partners involved in cancer patient and survivorship care to integrate and coordinate activities and programs.

 

The position provides administrative oversight and drives future strategy for enhancing and expanding cancer-relevant research across the University of Cincinnati (UC) and partner institutions – Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) and UC Health. The position is essential to building a world class cancer center through innovation and implementation of best practices which will allow the UCCC to successfully pursue its goal of National Cancer Institute designation.

 

This executive-level position also has responsibility for aligning efforts with campus-wide marketing, communications, and advancement offices to support both clinical and research dimensions of the Center. As appropriate, he/she serves as a representative on various institutional leadership committees and boards. This position has administrative accountability for the Center’s assigned space, investments, budget, information systems, and human resources associated with its research and administrative operations.

Essential Functions

  • Provides input and executes the mission-driven, strategic planning and evaluation efforts for the Center with priority placed on implementing best practices and building supporting infrastructure which will assist the Center in obtaining and maintaining National Cancer Institute designation and achieving comprehensive cancer center status.
  • Assists UCCC faculty leadership team with all research operational activities and functions of the Center.  
  • Oversees the management of all research relevant Cancer Center components including all Center-sponsored research cost centers including the clinical trials office, shared resources, community outreach and engagement, grants management for Center-based grants, philanthropy, facilities, and information technology.
  • Assists the UCCC faculty leadership team with the preparation and administration of budgets as necessary to ensure the financial viability of the Center’s research operations.  In addition, oversees and supervises the fiscal management of the Center, including financial planning, budget analysis, monthly/annual operational and financial performance metrics, business plans, strategy and other finance-related matters.  
  • Assists the Center’s faculty leadership with external faculty and staff recruitment as directed; coordinates the arrival of new faculty and staff with UC, CCHMC and the Cancer Center and provides monitoring and oversight of recruitment packages/business plans involving use of Center philanthropic and/or institutional operating funds.
  • Works to ensure collaboration with all UC Colleges, UC Academic Health Center, as well as, with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and UC Health, and their respective clinical and research operations.
  • Participates in the ongoing support and implementation of technology to support information systems for the Cancer Center.  These systems are used to support basic, clinical and population research activities, as well as administrative data and informatics required by the NCI P30 Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG).
  • Assists UCCC faculty leadership team in activities related to the Center’s executive committee, external scientific advisory board, community advisory board(s), and philanthropic advisory/campaign board(s).

 

Essential Functions Continued

  • Creates and implements new programs, initiatives, and policies for the Cancer Center.
  • Participates in planning and support of the fundraising efforts, community outreach, government relations, and public relations, working closely with UC Foundation staff members and other appropriate offices.
  • Provides expertise and assistance in developing successful large-scale grant submissions that are critical to the mission of the Center (P01s, SPORES, T32, U54, etc.).
  • Participates in professional leadership activities, including community education programs, faculty relationship building, professional association contributions and presentations on the state and national level, with particular focus on the CCAF (Cancer Center Administrator’s Forum), AACI (Association of American Cancer Institutes), and ACE (Association for Cancer Executives).
  • Lead, manage, mentor, and develop a team of professional employees which form the Administrative Core of the Cancer Center.

Minimum Requirements

Previous administrative experience within an NCI-designated clinical or comprehensive cancer center and/or other significant NIH P30 center grant mechanism.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree. 
  • Master’s degree or higher is ideal.

Required Experience

  • A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant work experience.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in a supervisory and/or management capacity with proven record of accomplishments.
  • Working knowledge of National Cancer Institute P30 Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) application and reporting requirements.

 

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Master’s degree or higher educational degree in a relevant discipline.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in biomedical research, clinical, or health care setting.
  • Detailed knowledge of National Cancer Institute P30 Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) application and reporting requirements, including experience in coordinating initial submission, competing renewals, and/or related progress reports.  Understanding of CCSG reviewer, study section, and site reviewer expectations.
  • Demonstrates strong skills in organization, planning and evaluation, oral and written communications, and strong financial acumen.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the area of process improvement and system re-design, preferably within an academic medical center.
  • Experience developing individual, institutional, and large-scale multi-project cancer research proposals (NIH and other peer-reviewed agencies or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to set direct and vision, persuade internal and external constituents, establish priorities, develop policies and procedures, and allocate resources when needed.  
  • Ability to act as both mentor and supervisor to both exempt and non-exempt professional staff.
  • Ability to work effectively within a matrix organization as well as develop productive inter-institutional and inter-agency relationships locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • Demonstrates ability to lead groups from diverse professional areas and operates comfortably at a variety of organizational levels to achieve results.
  • Acts proficiently in unstructured situations; working well with little direction, though able to accept direction as necessary.
  • Demonstrates skills in conflict management and possesses excellent interpersonal skills.
