Department Overview
As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (COM) has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. In partnership with the UC Health academic healthcare system and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, College of Medicine’s faculty are transforming the world of medicine every day. The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences is a top-tier department with world-renowned faculty and staff.
The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences was originally created within the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine as the Department of Biochemistry in 1918. The department has thrived throughout the years and in 1989 was merged with the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology to form the current department. Our department’s name was updated to Molecular and Cellular Biosciences in 2022 to better reflect the research interests of the current faculty. The department has generated a strategic plan with three pillars of research: 1) Structural biology and biochemistry, 2) Microbiology, virology, and immunology, and 3) Cellular signaling, regenerative biology and neuroscience. There is overlap between these pillars amongst department faculty which creates an exciting and innovative environment for one to conduct research.
Job Overview
The department is recruiting to fill an open position in one of two focus areas at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank:
The first focus area is aimed at investigating molecular mechanisms of biomolecules using a combination of structural and functional methodologies. The Department is highly motivated to recruit individuals with a primary expertise in Cryo-electron microscopy and whose program will be aligned with the department’s three pillars of research. Resources include a state-of-the-art Cryo-EM facility with a designated sample preparation room, Talos L120C TEM, and Glacios cryo-TEM, along with extensive computational resources supported by the Center for Advanced Research Computing (ARC). In addition, the Department is home to outstanding resources for protein expression, purification, and biophysical characterization (e.g. AUC, ITC, CD, and DLS). The recruit will join an existing core of structural biologists with expertise in mentoring junior faculty and be expected to secure extramural funds and maintain a vibrant and innovative research program using Cryo-EM methodology. The second focus area is aimed at investigating molecular mechanisms of biomolecules using a combination of molecular and cellular approaches. The Department is highly motivated to recruit individuals with a primary expertise in cellular signaling as it relates to human health. It is anticipated that these individuals will synergize with current faculty in areas including but not limited to viral/bacterial pathogenesis, regenerative medicine, neuroscience, inflammation, structural biology, and protein folding disorders. The recruit will join an existing core of molecular and cellular biologists with expertise in mentoring junior faculty and will be expected to secure extramural funds and maintain a vibrant and innovative research program using modern cutting-edge approaches. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience.

Essential Functions
- Conducting research and publishing research results in the areas of biochemistry, microbiology or immunology.
- Supervision of graduate students and postdocs in research.
- Teaching of biochemistry, microbiology, or immunology to graduate students, undergraduate students, and medical students in a classroom setting.
- Will initially be expected to serve on departmental and College committees with the expectation that as their research program matures they will also serve on University and National committees, such as NIH study sections and journal editorial boards.
Minimum Requirements
- Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Microbiology, or a related field.
- At least two years of relevant research experience as a postdoctoral fellow.
