Job Overview

Assist in directing and managing the daily Environmental Health and Safety operations and serve as the department head when the Director is unavailable.

Essential Functions

  • Assist in the planning, organizing, directing and evaluating of university programs for EH&S.
  • Work with the Director and other university employees in matters involving regulatory enforcementactions, investigations, employee or community complaints and external EH&S factors that affectthe university’s operations and mission.
  • Advise the university administration on matters of potential liability.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on departmental key performance indicators.
  • Participate in strategic planning for EH&S operations.
  • Inspect property for potential safety hazards and recommend improvements; supervise theinvestigation of accidents to determine cause, recommend corrective action, and coordinate and document the university’s response to external regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborate with Faculty, Staff, and Students to sustain University compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
  • Keep abreast of federal and state of Ohio laws and statues governing EH&S compliance.
  • Monitor and evaluate health & safety programs for cost-effectiveness. Periodically evaluate EH&Sservice delivery in relation to customer requests and implement necessary changes.
  • Train and instruct staff on methods and procedures.
  • Maintain current knowledge of environmental regulations.
  • May provide emergency response on a rotating 24-hour on-call basis.
  • May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing,performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Required Education

Bachelor's degree must be in a technnical science and/or engineering

Required Trainings/Certifications

Professional certification in one or more Environmental Health & Safety fields.

Required Experience

  • Five (5) years of work experience in Environmental Health & Safety with demonstrated management experience
  • Experience with EH&S operations as a service group within a university environment
  • Knowledge of budgeting, strategic planning, and resources allocation
  • Experience working with outside consultants, PCB, asbestos, lead, and other remediation projects
  • Ability to properly wear approved fit-tested respirator and other PPE when required
