Job Overview

The College of Medicine is looking for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellow. The APP Fellow will assist in providing comprehensive, continuous, and personalized care to patients across the continuum of care at UC Health. This position will support the University’s mission and commitment to excellence in our students, faculty, staff and all our activities. The APP must demonstrate basic clinical and technical competence, sound clinical judgement, professionalism, and compliant documentation in a timely manner.

 

The program enables advanced practice nurses and physician assistants, collectively known as Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to acquire robust clinical experiences and critical care knowledge base within the multi-faceted critical care areas at UCMC. Clinical rotations include Internal Medicine, Neurology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Hepatology, and more.

 

The APP Fellow is expected to participate in protected, non-clinical didactic education in the form of lectures, simulation, skills labs, case studies, presentations, and other components of the critical care fellow curriculum as determined by the coordinator and director. The APP Fellow is also responsible for completion of an evidence-based practice or quality-improvement project during their tenure as a fellow.

Essential Functions

  • This position will support the University’s mission and commitment to excellence in our students, faculty, staff and all our activities
  • Primary responsibilities will be to collaborate with interdisciplinary health care team caring for critically ill patients, managing both their acute and chronic health care needs
  • The APP will demonstrate proficiency in core knowledge inclusive of assessment, treatment, and coordination of patientcare
  • The APP must demonstrate willingness to learn and build upon clinical and technical competence, sound clinical judgement, professionalism, and compliant documentation in a timely manner
  • Perform appropriate history and physical for complex, acute, critical, and chronically ill patients
  • Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities
  • Monitor the effectiveness of interventions
  • Maintain accurate medical records
  • Collaborate with other providers and members of the health care team in delivery of care and make appropriate referrals when needed
  • Educate patients and families about medical conditions and treatment plans
  • Facilitate staff, patient, and family decision making using evidence-based practice
  • Participate in research and development projects
  • Participate in education of nurse practitioners, nurse practitioner students and medical students
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need

Minimum Requirements

  • A Master's degree in Nursing and graduation from an accredited ANA approved Nurse Practitioner Program
  • Graduation from a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review 
  • Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies
  • National certification by ANCC or AANP
  • National Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants
  • Current/Valid license in the state of Ohio 

Additional Qualifications Considered

The program is open to:

  • Recent new master’s prepared graduates from accredited university and board certification in Acute Care Nurse Practitioner 
  • Recent new master’s prepared graduates from an accredited university in Physician Assistant
  • Experienced nurse practitioners or physician assistants interested in critical care but with no clinical critical care background
