Job Overview
As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the UC College of Medicine has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. The College of Medicine, Department of Surgery is looking for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP). The APP will assist in providing comprehensive, continuous, and personalized care to patients of the Section of General Surgery, Division of Trauma and Critical Care in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). This position is assigned to the acute care hospital setting for our complex surgical ICU patients such as acute care surgery, thoracic surgery, trauma, transplant surgery, and gynecologic surgery as examples. This position will support the University’s mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff and all our activities.
Primary responsibilities will be to collaborate with interdisciplinary health care team caring for trauma, emergency general surgery, and critically ill patients, managing both their acute and chronic health care needs. The APP will demonstrate an advanced level of medical and nursing knowledge, with the ability to evaluate, diagnose, and provide treatment for the complex surgical and critically ill patients from admission to stabilization and transfer out of ICU. The APP must demonstrate clinical and technical competence, sound clinical judgement, professionalism, and compliant documentation in a timely manner. Work schedule: primarily day assignment, will rotate evening/night, with a commitment of no more than every third weekend, and must be available to work some weekends.
Essential Functions
- Perform appropriate history and physical for complex, acute, critical, and chronically ill patients.
- Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests.
- Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.
- Monitor the effectiveness of interventions.
- Maintain accurate medical records.
- Collaborate with other providers and members of the health care team in delivery of care and make appropriate referrals when needed.
- Educate patients and families about medical conditions and treatment plans.
- Facilitate staff, patient, and family decision making using evidence-based practice.
- Participate in research and development projects.
- Participate in education of nurse practitioners, nurse practitioner students and medical students.

Required Education
For Nurse Practitioner:
- Master’s Degree in Nursing and graduation from an ANA approved Nurse Practitioner Program.
For Physician Assistant:
- Professional Degree.
- Graduation from a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies.
Required Trainings/Certifications
For Nurse Practitioner:
- Current/valid RN and APN license/license eligible to practice in the state of Ohio.
- May require certification in corresponding specialty.
For Physician Assistant:
- Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Must be licensed/license eligible in the State of Ohio with prescriptive authority.
Required Experience
For Nurse Practitioner:
- Three (3) years nursing experience.
- Additional related work experience may be required depending on specialty/sub-specialty.
For Physician Assistant:
- Minimum of one (1) year experience is required.
- Additional related work experience may be required depending on specialty/sub-specialty.
Additional Qualifications Considered
For Nurse Practitioner:
- Four (4) years of nursing experience in a critical care setting.
- ATLS certification or obtained within 6 months of hire.
- Certification in Adult Acute Care.
- BLS, ACLS.
For Physician Assistant:
- ATLS certification or obtained within 6 months of hire.
- BLS, ACLS certifications.
