About the Learning Commons

The Learning Commons provides centralized academic support for all University of Cincinnati students. We facilitate and train hundreds of outstanding peer educators to create flexible academic success programming. Many of these programs collaborate with faculty and others on campus for in-time support for specific courses and overall academic success here at UC. Each year more than 7,000 students take advantage of Learning Commons programs to build confidence, integrate on campus, and master challenging course content.

Job Overview

As the Academic Services Administrator for Supplemental Instruction (SI), this position will coordinate the SI program and oversee accreditation for the SI program with the International Center for Supplemental Instruction. The SI program seeks to provide learning opportunities for students in "historically difficult courses," characterized by a high rate of D, F grades and withdrawals. Supplemental Instruction is offered to large-enrollment foundational courses, primarily in the sciences. SI leaders facilitate weekly review sessions using active learning strategies to create a collaborative learning environment for all students who want to improve their understanding of the course material and improve their grades.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee the program objectives, logistics, execution, and assessment of the Supplemental Instruction program
  • Recruit, hire, and supervise student staff, student staff leaders, and graduate assistant (or equivalent graduate student worker)
  • Develop, assess, and lead training for new hires and returning student employees.
  • Collect and monitor program data (ex. track weekly usage, reporting data by semester and annually)
  • Identify problems and solutions, develop clear goals and action steps for program enhancement.
  • Manage online platforms including Canvas (Learning Management System) and scheduling platforms.
  • Participate in Learning Commons departmental committees, projects, and initiatives
  • Oversee student staff timekeeping, track and forecast program budgets, and implement program decisions based on budget forecasts.
  • Collaborate and liaise on Learning Commons initiatives (especially when connected with the Supplemental Instruction program) with relevant departments, faculty, staff, and campus partners.
  • Promote the Learning Commons via university presentations and communications
  • Hold additional responsibilities as it relates to supporting the Learning Commons, Peer Education Network, university service committees, etc.

Required Education

Bachelor's Degree

Required Experience

One (1) year of related experience in teaching, education administration, or related work within a university learning center (may include undergraduate or graduate work).

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Degree or experience in Higher Education, Psychology, K-12 Education, Science, Math
  • Master's degree

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
