The University of Cincinnati, College of Engineering and Applied Science, invites applications for the hiring of mulitple Academic Adviser positions. Up to three (3) positions will be filled from this posting. The adviser member provides academic advising, intervention, support services, and programming to students in the college. She/he utilizes a student-centered and holistic approach to enhance students' likelihood of retention, academic success, persistence and degree completion.


The position also requires a high degree of accountability and responsibility. Daily work involves handling information that is often sensitive and confidential in nature. Therefore; discretion is of critical importance. The individual will be expected to exercise sound judgment as it relates to dealing with students, faculty, staff, administrative personnel, parents and representatives of outside organizations. This person must be a resourceful, disciplined and detail-oriented individual. 


The position provides academic advising services for CEAS students and prospective students through individual appointments, group advising, walk-in advising, phone calls, emails, etc. Utilize the degree audit system and the student information system to assist students in constructing academic plans that allow them to make degree progress while observing the prerequisite structure of their chosen program. Supports students in making transitions within the University. Assist freshman, transfer, and transition orientation programs for domestic and international students.


Job Duties:

  • Advise students on academic programs that meet their educational goals.
  • Evaluate student readiness for coop, and certify graduation applications, assess and approve advanced standings, substitute courses and the use of courses to meet graduation requirements.
  • Recommend actions related to probation, suspension and dismissal of students.
  • Assist marginal students in determining appropriate course loads and academic plans.
  • Attend related meetings and functions.
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need. 


Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor degree and one (1) year of experience; -OR- Associate degree and three (3) years of experience; -OR- five (5) years of experience. Experience must be in advising high school and/or college students or related field. Strong group presentation skills are required.  


Ideal Qualifications: A master's degree with two years' experience in advising and mentoring college students; knowledge of and experience working with student development theory; strong analytical, organizational, and student service skills; excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to interact with students, faculty, staff, and departments throughout the university. Prior experience with electronic degree audit systems and proficiency and comfort with technology are preferred skills.  STEM background preferred.
