DEPARTMENT HEAD

Department of Biomedical Engineering

College of Engineering and Applied Science

UNIVERSITY of CINCINNATI

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is seeking a Department Head with the vision and leadership skills to expand and lead the transformative growth of BME to become the focal point at UC for inclusive and collaborative translational biomedical research, experiential learning and technological innovation. With strengths in the areas of cardiovascular tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, imaging and image guided therapeutics, orthopedics, cancer and medical device design across the practice of medicine, the Department Head will foster collaborations with the Academic Health campus through collaborative leadership. Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS), (172 full time and 135 tenured/tenure-track faculty), the Department Head will have responsibility for overseeing department operations, including academics, finances, personnel and planning, and will enjoy unprecedented opportunities to build on the base of over $36 million in grant funding in the strategic areas at UC and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC).

The University of Cincinnati is a culturally diverse urban campus and has the distinction of being 1 of 3 recognized Research 1 institutions (top tier research intensive) in Ohio and one of 115 in the nation.  It is in the top 6% of public universities according to the NSF HERD rankings. The University has embarked on a new strategic direction, “NEXT lives here”, with the goal of leading urban public universities like UC into a new era of innovation and impact of which BME should take a prominent role:  https://www.uc.edu/strategicdirection.html.

The Department Head is charged with developing and sustaining premier research programs and with preparing students to become high performing professionals in the local and global workplace. The concept of the first co-op program originated in CEAS and enjoys long standing relationships with regional industries.  As the University enters its 200th year, the new Head of BME will have the opportunity to transform the co-op program to integrate with the changing industrial and trade landscape. The Department Head will lead the development of innovative education and interdisciplinary research programs, encourage integrative efforts within CEAS and the University community, and strengthen entrepreneurial and academic partnerships with government, industry, and other academic entities.

BME houses undergraduate and graduate programs in Biomedical Engineering. BME has graduated over 340 bachelor’s and 30 PhD, MS, and Master of Engineering (MEng) alumni since its origination in 2001. Current undergraduate enrollment in the College includes 4,826 students, including those at the affiliated university in China (Chongqing), and 1314 graduate students. BME has 7 full time faculty, 4 of which are tenured or on tenure track.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Earned doctorate in Engineering or closely related field; a distinguished record in research and scholarship that will allow appointment to a senior tenured position; a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education; and demonstrated collaborative leadership, administrative, and interpersonal skills. The applicant should have a demonstrable commitment to a culturally diverse environment and recognition and service at the national and international level.

APPLICATION PROCESS:  Complete an Applicant Profile at https://jobs.uc.edu and upload your CV/Resume; then apply directly to Requisition # 37249 and include a cover letter, a statement of experience, vision, and leadership and at least three references. References will only be contacted for those candidates who are selected as finalists.

The position will remain open until filled but an initial applicant screening is expected to begin immediately.

UC is an urban public research university that is recognized as a research intensive institution.  As the University enters its 3rd century, we have committed to a strategic direction that is centered on Urban Futures, Urban Health and Cincinnati Public Schools. Innovation is the hallmark for this next century, with the 1819 Innovation Hub serving as the region’s destination for NEXT LIVES HERE thinking, making, doing, discovery and delivery.  The 1819 Building is the flagship of the Innovation Corridor with Digital Futures space soon to follow:   https://www.uc.edu/strategicdirection.html

The University is located in beautiful southwest Ohio. Cincinnati is a city in the midst of an exciting urban revival and a place known for its love of the arts, passion for sports and for its seriously impressive local food. As the center of culture and commerce for a region of more than 2 million people, the Queen City is an important hub of the Midwest. The area is home to nine Fortune 500 companies and lays claim to one of the most vibrant startup ecosystems in the nation. People here experience big-city amenities — professional sports teams, major museums, pristine parks and cultural attractions — while enjoying a small-town friendliness and a collaborative vibe.

Our city is diverse, our heritage is largely German and our landscape is covered by hills — many of which offer a beautiful view of the scenic Ohio River. In recent years, Cincinnati has experienced an impressive renaissance of its urban core —from The Banks entertainment district and the downtown business corridor to the trendy Over-the-Rhine and Uptown neighborhoods near campus. Located in OTR is Findlay Market, featuring fresh regional produce, crafts, charcuterie and other gourmet offerings. Once noted for its many breweries which disappeared during Prohibition, the resurgence in this legacy has resulted in over 40 craft breweries throughout the greater Cincinnati area.
