The College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for an Interior Design faculty position at the rank of tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor level in the top-ranked School of Architecture and Interior Design (SAID).

 

The College of DAAP has as its primary mission the creation of a better visual and design environment.

 

The School of Architecture and Interior Design (SAID) confers an accredited professional degree in Interior Design (BSID); an accredited first professional graduate degree in Architecture (M Arch); an undergraduate degree in Architecture (BS Arch); a post-professional degree (MS Arch); a Ph.D. degree in architecture and a newly launched post professional Master of Interior Design (MIntD). There are approximately 190 interior design students and a total of 688 students in the School and 25 full-time faculty.

 

The Program of Interior Design is vested (as is the University and College) in cooperative education (co-op) and in the belief that it is an effective structure in which to educate interior designers. This position defines a pedagogical model, which combines the University’s General Education program that stresses the core competencies of critical thinking, knowledge integration, effective communication, and social responsibility, with a professional education that includes theory, skill building, and specialized technical knowledge. This educational process is grounded in a collaborative exchange between a broad and specific design language and in practice that welds the academic ideals of theory with the application necessary to practice. The commitment to educating students in both theory and practice simultaneously requires synthesizing a variety of diverse content areas and topics into a coherent academic and co-op curriculum and encourages a climate of risk-taking, independent thought, and innovation.

 

UC’s Interior Design program has been named the Most Admired undergraduate interior design program by deans and department heads for the last 16 years according to Design Intelligence. The program includes the renowned cooperative education program (Co‐op) that places students in professional work environments (5 semesters for interior design) as part of the curriculum. SAID’s Co-op network includes over 500 firms across the globe. The Interior Design Program was one of the first ten programs accredited by the Foundation of Interior Design Education and Research (now CIDA) in 1974, and has held continuous accreditation since then.

 

Position Responsibilities: This position includes a full-time teaching load (one studio and one lecture/seminar per semester), which entails developing and delivering course materials incorporating theory, practice and practical applications and are expected to actively participate in thesis and dissertation committees. Scholarly activity, design research and/or creative scholarship (practice) is expected. A full-time faculty member must serve on various School, College, and/or University committees.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must hold a professional degree in interior design or a related field.
  • One degree (undergrad, graduate or PhD) must be in interior design/architecture.
  • Candidates must have at least one year of relevant experience (including studio instruction) in an institution of higher education or extensive professional experience in interior design.
  • Candidates must be NCIDQ certified or eligible to become certified (http://www.cidq.org/eligibility-requirements).

 

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Studio teaching experience
  • Experience in interactive media, advanced digital technologies, or intelligent design
  • Ability to teach in History and Theory of Design
  • Clear research agenda
