The University of Cincinnati Press seeks a full time acquisitions editor to UC Press Acquisitions Editor to serve as the primary commissioning editor for the press.  Reporting to the Director of the Press, the Acquisitions Editor has the opportunity to define publishing lists and participate at the start of a fluid, agile publishing program within a unique publishing operations model focused on real-world scholarly content with global reach and impact. 

 

Characteristic Duties

  1. Acquire various projects each year in inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary Social Justice Studies including monographs and course/practitioner books with broad national and global practical applications covering social science, humanities, business, and leadership fields
  2. Create and execute short and long-term editorial plans for the Press for assigned lists, with an awareness of the field of publications from peer academic and university presses
  3. Develop and communicate Profit and Loss statements
  4. Present recommended projects to the board(s) and work with authors to review projects
  5. Assist with development of new scholarly lists
  6. Develop pool of peer reviewers appropriate for an interdisciplinary list in social justice studies and community engagement
  7. Manage to ensure contract terms for delivery date, permissions and manuscript technical requirements are met by authors
  8. Coordinate with appropriate staff to ensure on-time digital and print publication of projects.
  9. Represent the University at academic, industry and community meetings and events.
  10. Plan and conduct campus visits to key social justice institutes in order to build awareness of the Press’s publishing mission and unique program
  11. Perform related duties based on departmental need

 

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in related field with a minimum of three (3) years of experience. Experience must be in related fields of academic and/or scholarly publishing
  2. Demonstrated expertise with managing and building a peer reviewer network, managing authors and series editors, creation of fiscally responsible P/L’s, negotiating contracts, providing author guidance in all aspects of the publishing process
  3. Exceptional communication, organizational and networking skills; strong Microsoft Office and Adobe skills.
  4. Ability to create and follow deadlines and work with production, marketing and sales teams

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  1. Previous experience signing 15+ scholarly peer-reviewed publications per year.Ability to create a plan to acquire 15+ new original scholarly books per year written by authors and editors which align with the press's intention to invite and cultivate a list of authors and editors representing all forms of diversity and drawing from all disciplines throughout the world
  2. Broad vision of both author and user experience and ability to envision, guide and develop rich media and interactive publications, leveraging the robust library initiatives including the institutional repository, digital scholarship and publishing services
  3. Demonstrated expertise developing individual manuscripts from the acquisitions stage through publication
  4. Collaborative approach to working with team. which includes both part-time business staff and freelance production and marketing staff
  5. Experience creating new scholarly lists based on assessment of needs and gaps within existing fields of scholarly publishing
  6. Experience commissioning and publishing regional books
  7. Journals experience a plus

 

As part of the University of Cincinnati Press, the Acquisitions Editor will need to build a pipeline of scholarly titles, authors and peer reviewers within a collaborative work environment utilizing an infrastructure that supports both the Library and the Press.
