Basic Function/Purpose

The Assistant Director provides hands-on leadership for facility and operational needs of the Campus Recreation Center (CRC) and multiple satellite facilities. This position requires an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working in a fast-paced, results-oriented team. A vital component of this position is a demonstrated ability to work autonomously with initiative, critical and creative thinking, as well as a strong commitment to collaboration, student development and engagement, and customer service.  Overall responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic planning and oversight for facility and operational needs that may include housekeeping, maintenance, project coordination and execution, climbing wall and teambuilding programming, event coordination, facility scheduling, etc.
  • Direct leadership and development of full-time staff that may include two Program Managers (Coordinators) and secondary oversight of student staff (i.e, hiring/firing, developing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).
  • Assist in the daily management of facilities and equipment of all campus recreation facilities.
  • Monitor facilities and operations annual operating and capital budget.   
  • Coordinate or assist in leading capital projects and renovations.
  • Coordinate housekeeping needs and serve as primary contact for housekeeping work orders. Provide secondary oversight of maintenance needs.
  • Assist with facility and equipment purchase, repairs and replacement.
  • Coordinate facility signage including promotional and operational signage campaigns and policy and procedure updates.
  • Provide departmental leadership for risk management and emergency action plan, and serve as co-chair of Risk Management committee.
  • Lead American Red Cross Professional Rescuer classes for CPR/AED/First Aid. Assist with code blue drills and instruct safety training courses and in-service training for student staff.
  • Develop, evaluate, and revise policies, procedures, and operation protocols to ensure safe and well-managed facilities.
  • Utilize Rec Automation software including event management, program registration, reporting, etc.

  • Maintain accurate participant and program data and compile usage reports.
  • Maintain and track Campus Recreation incident reports and serve as a liaison with the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards.
  • Assist with oversight for the administration and development of policies and procedures for facility security and systems including: Bearcat card access system, KeyWatcher key management system, ID and key requests, alarm code activation, security systems, and loading dock access.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of facility rentals and special events including setup and teardown as needed.
  • Direct and maintain excellent member and visitor services and relations. 
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need. Primary responsibilities within Facility Operations may be determined based on team strengths and interests. This job description can be changed at any time.
  • Requires occasional work weekends and evening hours. 

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

 

Required Trainings/Certifications

  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers with First Aid certification. Must be certified within six (6) months of employment.

Required Experience

  • Three (3) years of professional experience in campus recreation or athletic facility operations or closely related field.
  • One (1) year supervision.
  • Previous experience hiring, training, developing and evaluating staff.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Experience and a strong background in recreation/athletic operations including facility supervision, project coordination and execution, event planning, facility scheduling and risk management.
  • Three (3) years of staff supervision.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities.
  • Strong communication, organization, management, leadership and professional skills.
  • Knowledge of various related systems, including Rec Automation, SubItUp, Connect 2 Concepts (C2C), Canva, Microsoft Office. 
  • Proven commitment to student and professional staff development. 
  • Demonstrated ability to identify problems, assess alternatives, render consistent and logical decisions. 
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and as a team player and handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment that values high expectations, accountability and balanced lifestyles.  
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm.
  • Experience in Climbing Wall operations.
  • Ability to assist in event setup that may require lifting in excess of 30lbs.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range of $52,000-$64,000 dependent on the candidate's experience.
